Q. Will I get sea sick?

A. If you are asking this, then you may be prone to motion sickness. You may wish to consider Bonnine or Triptone before you go out on the water. It has been suggested that one take the pill the night before your trip to get it started working in your system. Then take another one the day of the trip. Read the package instructions to be sure. We also have candied ginger on board. At the first sign of an upset, ask the Divemaster for some of the ginger. It is a medical fact that ginger can settle the stomach.

Q. Do I need to know how to swim?

A. Yes, we are taking you at least 5 miles out into the open ocean, and you will need to be able to swim.
You will be issued a safety vest, this is not a life jacket but it will keep you from getting tired and make it easier to have a rest if you do get a little tired.

Q. Are there sharks, sting rays, or barracudas on the reef?

A. Yes, there are no fences in the ocean, all the aquatic life is free to come and go as they please. Just remember you DO NOT look like a food source to the fish, we are far larger then what they normally eat. We as humans make too much noise. If you do see any of those things, most of the time you will be one of the luckiest people on the reef.
The sharks that call our waters home are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and feed at night. Seeing one mostly means you have disturbed their nap and they are just going to find a nice quiet place to finish their nap. In over 25 years of doing snorkel tour operation, no one has ever been eaten or attached while snorkeling, by sharks.

Q. How old do you need to be to snorkel?

A. We recommend age 4, children understand better at this age. The child should also be able to swim and be accompanied by a parent to assure that they do not get tired or head off in the wrong direction. The hardest thing for children to understand is they can’t breathe out of their nose with a mask in the way. If you have time to before to explain or even practice in a pool or even the tub, great, it will only make your child and your time on the reef a little less stressful as they will have a better understanding of what to expect.

Q. Can I bring a spear gun or spearfish?

A. No you cannot. While you are with us, you will be either in John Pennekamp State Park or Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary waters. These waters are protected, meaning they are no take, no kill areas of the reef. There is no spear fishing in Key Largo waters at all.

Q. What do I need to bring on the boat?

A. Sunscreen, swimsuit and towel. There is drinking water on the boat for free, soft drinks and snacks for sale ($1).
You are more than welcome to bring anything else you might think you need, but we ask; NO coolers, no glass, no alcohol, we provide to large coolers with ice please feel free to use ours.

Q. Does the boat have a bathroom?

A. There is a “Marine Head” on the boat (bathroom), the Captain will give you instructions on how to use and not use it in the briefing on the boat .

Q. Weather conditions and rain storms

A. During the windy seasons of the year we will let you know if there are any special conditions you need to worry about. If it is raining we still go snorkeling. If we expect thunder and lightning we will cancel the trip. Remember we are taking you 5 or so miles into the ocean and the weather here on the island does not always mean the same conditions on the water.
We would do nothing to endanger your life and will always keep you informed as to conditions.

Q. How many people go on the boat?

A. The boat is Coast Guard Certified to hold 47 people. This does not mean that the boat is always full. It depends on the time of the year, or the holiday season.

Q. Jellyfish?

A. If we are aware of the Jellyfish or Man-O-War, we will let you know. Again ,we truly want you to enjoy your time with us on the water, so part of our job is to make sure you are aware of any conditions that are out there.

Q. Are we going to the Statue of Christ?

A. We ONLY go to the Statue on our 12:15 pm tour, we also only go if the conditions are favorable for us to enjoy the Statue. It is not protected by the reef so when it is windy or has been windy, it is very wavy and looses visibility quickly. We want to be able to show you and everyone on the boat the best time and our Captains can judge the conditions before we even leave the dock.

Q. Are we going to be snorkeling in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park waters?

A. We will be in either John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park waters or in the National Marine Sanctuary waters while we are snorkeling.

Q. Is it ok to snorkel if I am pregnant?

A. Yes, please let us know if you are. We can judge by the winds how rough it might or might not be. We want everyone to be able to have a great time, but we also want to make sure that Mom and baby are not going to get hurt.
But as long as you can swim, no need to worry about being pregnant.

Q. Is it ok to snorkel if I am on my monthly (period)?

A. Yes, sharks and other aquatic life are not attracted to that particular scent.
